Sandy Fitch, a licensed associate broker with Legacy Properties, Sotheby International Realty Real Estate of Portland, first visited Diamond Cove in the summer of 1994 with her husband Ron. Entranced by what they saw, they returned the following summer and bought their first Diamond Cove home. They have been year-round residents of Diamond Cove since 1996. Sandy has been dealing exclusively in Diamond Cove properties since 1997.

“For years, my husband and I had been searching for an eventual retirement home, a place at which our daughters and their families would enjoy spending time, too. Ron and I had been up and down the east, gulf and west coasts, as far north as Vancouver, B.C. and although we were attracted to Savannah and Charleston, we didn’t get “bitten” until we came to Diamond Cove. When we brought our oldest daughter and her husband to Diamond Cove to show them what we had found and what we were contemplating purchasing, they bought a house the same day!”

This web site has been designed to give the potential buyer as much
information as possible, and to answer questions that are frequently asked by someone who is considering purchasing property on an island off the coast of Maine.

Photographs and web sites can never tell the whole story, however, and we encourage visits whenever possible. A trip to Diamond Cove at any time of the year is never wasted effort, even if you eventually decide island living is not in your future. It is a unique and beautiful place, with an interesting and varied history. No one will ever pressure you into buying property here. (But be forewarned; many Diamond Cove homeowners have reported a feeling of “magic” when stepping onto the Diamond Cove pier for the first time.)

Diamond Cove is a private island community, hence advance appointments to view properties are required. Please call Sandy at 207-766-5886 or email her at sandy@diamondcoveproperties.com. All efforts will be made to accommodate your travel schedule.

           DIRECTIONS:

Maine waterfront building lots, island propertyTo get to Diamond Cove: Take Casco Bay Lines from downtown Portland.

To get to Portland: Portland International Jetport is convenient and served by major airlines.  Amtrak offers the new “Downeaster” service from Boston, and connects to the rest of Amtrak’s rail system.  Greyhound, Vermont Transit, and Concord Trailways serve Portland from all directions.

By car: from the Maine Turnpike (Interstate 95) north or south, take Exit 44 (formerly 6A) onto Interstate 295; Exit 7 to Franklin Street, which leads directly to Casco Bay Lines on the waterfront.

          PARKING:

The Casco Bay Lines Parking Garage, attached to the terminal, is the most convenient parking place for homeowners who use the ferry to travel to and from Portland. It is managed by Fore River Management, Ruth Demers, who can be reached at 761-9591 or cbg@maine.rr.com. The monthly fee at the time of this writing is $95, but there is a long waiting list, so it is recommended to add your name to the list as soon as possible. Short-term parking can be accommodated on a first-come-first-served basis, but it is very expensive, and not always available, especially in the summer.

The City of Portland is currently providing some parking for islanders in the vicinity of the ferry terminal. There are 3 open air lots, (not garages), that vary in price with distance from the terminal. Call 871-5816 to find out about availability for monthly spaces. (These lots may disappear soon, when redevelopment of the waterfront area takes place.)

Several other parking garages are located within reasonable walking distance of the ferry:

Custom House - 774-2748, corner of Pearl and Fore Streets.

Fore Street - 772-7738, Fore Street between Exchange and Union.

Temple Street - 772-5762, Middle and Temple Streets, with entrances on Temple and Exchange Streets.

County Courthouse - 871-8275, rear of police station, entrance on Newbury Street. (This is a great option for free parking for weekenders who arrive after 9PM on Friday and leave before 7AM on Monday. The parking lot is unattended during these hours, at the time of this writing. Always call first, to make sure this policy is still in effect and make sure to remove your car before 7AM on Monday or it will be towed and you will incur a fine.)

Top of the Old Port - 828-1212, an open parking lot is located on the corner of Congress and Pearl.
